This project was the first time I'd ever done storyboards and it was mostly just translating Graham of theDuoGroup's sketches into a more refined, cinematic format. It gave me reeeeaaally loose parameters to work within, so it was very freeing, I essentially got to fill in everything concept wise with this one, and I just had to go to Graham for final approval.
With each frame we wanted to create a constantly building sense of danger that showed some of Altair's trademark moves. Shimmying along walls, leaping across poles and scaling walls. We also wanted to keep a definite sense of continuity so that the scene shifts weren't quite so jarring. As a result I tried to include a suggestion of a path going to and from the current scene through actual representation--like doorways-- and other visual cues, such as traces of colors that bleed from one scene to the next.
At the time I had gotten the BBC Planet Earth dvds and was in love with the phosphorescent worms, so I had to throw them in. Death by stalagmite had been implied all along as a potential way for Altair to meet his fate but when I actually showed others having perished that way, I didn't want it to seem like an old trick at that point, so I threw in the ropes that could either save or ensnare anyone who wasn't quite sure-footed enough. They also served as a nice compositional element.
Very cool to see this and read your notes. I really loved the scenes showing those Assassins who didn't quite make it. It really added a sense of danger. And who doesn't like glow-worms?
